Job number #403816 / 403858

Background
New Zealand Steel is the country’s leading producer of flat rolled steel products, serving construction, manufacturing, and agriculture. Operating from the Glenbrook Steel Mill, 40 km south of Auckland, the company is committed to sustainable and efficient steel production. Its Melter feed bin de-dust system removes hot dust and fumes when feed material is batch fed into 24 charging bins across two Melter units.

Challenges
The project was executed at an operational steel mill, requiring careful traffic management and strict health and safety measures. The high-temperature, abrasive dust necessitated a two-stage design, and the project was time sensitive as it supports Project Electron—a $300 million initiative to enhance efficiency and reduce carbon footprint.

Our Contribution
Taylors focused on the fabrication of two key components based on the design from its parent company, Vortex Engineering:

  • FC900 Fan: Manufactured with high-grade materials to ensure durability and reliable performance under harsh conditions.
  • 49-7 Multicyclone: Produced to effectively separate high-temperature, abrasive dust.

We also supported a trial build to validate our processes and ensure smooth installation. Our work contributed to the successful implementation of the system and improved operations at New Zealand Steel.
