Shortly after arriving in New Zealand from England, John Morgan Taylor formed a partnership with Henry Oakley in Christchurch. Together, they established a firm known as Taylor and Oakley, specializing as Plumbers, Iron & Tinplate Workers, Gasfitters, Bellhangers, and Sanitary Engineers.
The company won a Silver Medal at the Canterbury A&P Show and a Gold Medal at the New Zealand International Exhibition for the excellence of its products.
Taylor and Oakley split up to form Taylors Ltd., under the management of H.M. Taylor and E.C. Taylor, sons of the founder. The company commenced business at 643 Colombo Street, previously occupied by Aulsebrooks & Co., a biscuit manufacturer.
Taylors Ltd opened a branch in Wanganui.
Taylors Ltd built a new premises on Lichfield Street, laying the foundation for their Engineering Division.
Taylors Ltd purchased Oakleys. Both firms began to operate as complementary businesses.
The two firms, Taylors Ltd. and Oakleys, were merged and incorporated under Ryland Holdings Ltd. The ‘Ryland’ name was inspired by J.M. Taylor’s residence at the corner of Fitzgerald Avenue and Ferry Road.
Vortex Engineering acquired Taylors Limited, subsequently rebranding the company as Taylors Manufacturing Ltd, trading under the name Taymac.
Taylors rebranded with a new logo and colour scheme as part of the ongoing advancement of company’s brand.
