In this year, Taylors Manufacturing has celebrated our 150 years anniversary of engineering excellence. From our beginnings in 1875 as a small Christchurch workshop to our role today as a trusted provider of engineered solutions today, this milestone reflects a legacy built on quality, innovation, and our people.
Our beginnings
The Taylors story began in 1875 when John Morgan Taylor, newly arrived from England, formed a partnership with Henry Oakley. Operating as Taylor & Oakley, the business specialised in plumbing, iron and tinplate work, gas fitting, and sanitary engineering, at the time these were important trades for the Canterbury region.
A reputation for craftsmanship and reliability was established early, setting the foundation for generations to follow.
Growth and evolution
By 1906, the company had gained national recognition, earning a Silver Medal at the Canterbury A&P Show and a Gold Medal at the New Zealand International Exhibition for engineering excellence.
In 1919, the business evolved into Taylors Ltd, led by H.M. Taylor and E.C. Taylor. Expansion followed, including new premises on Lichfield Street in 1926 and the acquisition of Oakleys in 1934, strengthening technical capability and reach.
In 1996, Taylors was acquired by Vortex Engineering, becoming Taylors Manufacturing Ltd and entering a new phase of growth within a specialist engineering group.
In 2022, Taylors refreshed its brand to reflect its modern capability, forward focus, and commitment to continuous improvement.
